Shubman Gill is now among the most important leaders in Indian cricket as he has already led the team to victories in both Tests and ODIs, besides being the captain of Gujarat Titans in the IPL.
Gill’s most recent feat of captaincy can be attributed to his performance in the second ODI match against West Indies in Guwahati, when he led India to an eight-wicket win by scoring an unbeaten 223 off 133 deliveries.
He played a record-breaking inning that made sure India chased 406 to take a 2-0 lead in the three-match series.
Now at the age of 27, Gill has led India in Test matches, ODIs, T20Is, and the Gujarat Titans in the IPL.
Gill has also been leading the Gujarat Titans franchise since the IPL 2024 season and has led the franchise to back-to-back playoffs in 2025 and 2026.

Gill's stint as ODI captain began in October 2025 against Australia. His captaincy debut ended in a 2-1 series defeat, while stand-in captain KL Rahul subsequently led the side during the South Africa tour.
After returning from injury, Gill was back in charge for the home ODI series against New Zealand in January 2026, but India again suffered a 2-1 series defeat.
Gill registered his first ODI series win as captain against Afghanistan at home in June 2026, leading India to consecutive victories in the three-match series.
He continued as India's ODI captain in the series against England in July 2026. Though India won the first match at Edgbaston to raise hopes, England wrestled back the series by winning the next two matches.
Gill's record as the ODI captain became better for India as the team played their ongoing home series against West Indies. With India securing a victory in the first ODI at Thiruvananthapuram, Gill then notched a record of 223* in Guwahati, leading India to an eight-wicket victory.

Gill was appointed as India's Test captain prior to the England tour of 2025 owing to the retirement of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli from Test cricket.
However, his first big challenge saw India draw the five-Test series 2-2 against England. This was followed by the Indian team securing its first Test series win under Gill as captain, which came against West Indies at home.
Following that, he guided the team to their overseas test series win against Afghanistan in June 2026 before guiding India into the two-Test series against Sri Lanka.
The Galle test against Sri Lanka further improved Gill's statistics as captain. India scored 462 in the first innings, bundled Sri Lanka out for 284 and then put Sri Lanka at a target of 372 by declaring at 193/9. However, Sri Lanka were eventually bowled out for 206 and India won the game by 165 runs.
The win marked Gill's sixth win as Test captain in 10 games, which took his win ratio to 60%, while India have a 1-0 lead in the ongoing Sri Lanka series.
The draw in Colombo, however, reduced his win percentage as a skipper.
