Bruce Springsteen has divided his fan base on social media after throwing his support behind Abdul El-Sayed in the Michigan race for U.S. Senate.

“Dr. El-Sayed is a fighter for our American Constitution, he’s a fighter for our American Democracy,” Springsteen said in a post shared to X and Instagram .

U.S. President Donald Trump has called El-Sayed a “jihadist,” according to the New York Times .

“If Abdul and the Democrats win, they will open the floodgates and invite hordes of jihadis to our shores, creating a nightmare of violence and terror until you cannot even have a Christmas,” Trump told more than 4,000 supporters in Michigan last week.

Trump went on to refer to El-Sayed, whose family immigrated from Egypt, as a “jihadist Muslim Brotherhood member” and called his Republican opponent, Mike Rogers, “perfect.”

“I call him apple pie,” Trump said of Rogers. “He’s like, perfect, this guy. He’s like central casting. He’s what your state is all about.”

But Springsteen took aim at Trump, with whom he has publicly feuded for years, saying El-Sayed is “a fighter against the corrupt, lawless and anti-American leadership currently in the White House.”

“That’s why I’m in his corner 100%,” added Springsteen, who has been a vociferous critic of Trump’s second presidency.

The 77-year-old New Jersey rocker’s endorsement, which has generated more than 1.1 million views and over 14,000 comments, split his legions of fans.

“ The Boss doing Boss things,” one fan cheered.

But others accused the Born to Run singer of supporting the Muslim Brotherhood, which is designated as a terrorist organization by a number of countries.

“Bruce, genuinely curious: what specific actions has Abdul El-Sayed taken to defend the Constitution or American democracy that distinguish him from his opponent? You describe him as a fighter, but can you point to something he’s actually done?” one critic asked.

Another commenter alleged that both El-Sayed’s sister-in-law and his Imam publicly denounce gay rights.

“Abdul is two different people,” they wrote in part. “At his Mosque, and among his family, he is a strict authoritarian Muslim, but in public he pretends to be secular.”

After Trump claimed that El Sayed’s half sister, Eman Abdelhadi, celebrated the Oct. 7, 2023, massacre of Israelis, the Democrat’s campaign told Fox News that he disagreed with her “on a number of political positions and the rhetoric she’s chosen to use.”

But a social media post in 2012 by Abdelhadi appeared to refer to the Muslim Brotherhood, in which she said, “my family has long been MB.”

Others noted that El-Sayed has campaigned with far-left streamer Hasan Piker, who said “America deserved 9/11” back in 2019.

“I’m not here to disavow people’s views,” El-Sayed told POLITICO earlier this year. “This whole gotcha game, platform policing, cancel culture — I thought we were over it.”

Speaking to NBC’s Meet the Press in August, El-Sayed backtracked and said Piker’s comments were “dumb.”

“Of course it was a dumb statement and of course I think Hasan himself would say that was a dumb statement,” El-Sayed said. “He disavowed it. So yes, America didn’t deserve 9/11.”

‘Is he a wolf in sheep’s clothing?’

Trump’s close friend Kid Rock, who hails from Michigan, has also sounded the alarm on El-Sayed, comparing him to the 9/11 hijackers during a recent appearance on Real Time With Bill Maher .

“People talk about assimilation too all the time, right? This man has very much assimilated — good education, well-spoken, even a good-looking guy — (but) you know who else assimilated very well? Those pieces of s*** that flew those planes into our World Trade Centers. The Fort Hood shooter,” Rock said. “This has happened all over the world, so it scares the hell out of me, this Islamic extremism. I don’t know, is he a wolf in sheep’s clothing, or is he just a wolf in wolf’s clothing?”

Trump also bashed Jewish voters who are considering voting for El-Sayed in this week’s midterms.

“Any Jewish person that supports this guy should be ashamed of themselves,” Trump said, adding that he “cannot understand how anybody who’s Jewish can even think about voting for this guy.”

Trump also floated the idea of forcing El-Sayed “to go through a metal detector before he’s allowed to go into the Senate.”

According to the Times , El-Sayed holds a narrow lead over Rogers in Michigan.

He has said Trump’s attacks are “deflections and deceptions based on no evidence.”

“They’re not talking about your gas or your groceries … They’re not talking about clean air or clean water. They’re not talking about any of the things that the government is actually supposed to solve. Why? Because Donald Trump has created those problems,” El-Sayed said at a news conference in Detroit last week.

If El-Sayed and a few other states turn blue, Trump’s grip on the presidency could be loosened with Democrats controlling the balance of power in Congress.
