The Seattle Kraken Shane Wright trade has been executed, after years of debate, essentially, to trade and land Matthew Wood from the Nashville Predators. Therefore, let us discuss this trade, that has been brewing from the Kraken perspective for some time. The thinking was that the fit with Matty Beniers and Shane Wright down the middle in the top six, there have been rumours circulating for a while that saw the Seattle Kraken floating Wright, in favour of a top-six scorer. It truly is a hot commodity, with both the Montreal Canadiens and Ottawa Senators rumours being specifically linked to the same topic of late.

NHL Seattle Kraken Make Shane Wright Trade to the Nashville Predators for Matthew Wood

The Kraken had originally drafted Shane Wright fourth overall in the 2022 NHL Entry Draft. At the time of the draft, the top was thought to be a game-changing move for the Kraken. In his draft season with the Kingston Frontenacs, Wright finished behind Connor Bedard in total points that year. Yes, Wright was thought to be a top-flight prospect, but at the same time, was smaller statured, played a more complete role, but was nonetheless as skilled as his rivals.

However, the crossover in career trajectories of Wright and star Kraken centre Matty Beniers, have ultimately brought about the decision by Kraken general manager Jason Botterill. Shane Wright has played 183 career regular season games, and recorded 39 goals, 43 assists, for 82 points, in 13:42 of average ice time, winning 43 percent of his draws, and has struggled this year out of the gate. They do say sell high, but sometimes things just has to change. So good for both sides. Wright is a highly-skilled player, and will boost the Predators lineup, just like he did for the Kraken throughout his young NHL career.

Just ending with Shane Wright, he just needed to go to an organization with more centre depth. Maybe he could rotate on the wing, more so on the power play and find his shot at the NHL level. His career shooting percentage is 17.3. Therefore, it is entirely possible, simply given third line minutes, he could easily hit career highs.

Matthew Wood Could Be Good for the Pacific Northwest

Wood’s numbers from a trajectory standpoint are very similar to Wright, in fact. He has 18 goals and 16 assists in 91 career NHL games. The 6’4″ winger, tries to use his size to attack. If he can find chemistry, perhaps with Beniers, the Kraken might have a new old one-two.

Honestly, if the Nashville Predators and general manager Chris MacFarland are feeling anything after this trade, it is a great success.

The Last Word

The Shane Wright trade is a big moment for the Burlington, Ontario native who thought the Kraken would be his home. If Wright can be surrounded with the right opportunities, from a ice time and linemates perspective, he can start to have very productive seasons, sooner rather than later. Alexis Lafreniere definitely feels like a comparable, for an upper echelon ceiling. Lafreniere is the type of utility guy trying his best to show he is Team Canada calibre.

Matthew Wood was doing find, from a career projection standpoint. Moving to Seattle, back home near British Columbia, will be an exciting opportunity to enjoy the scenery the area has to offer.
