Norvell finished his FSU tenure with a 36-24 loss to Clemson Saturday, dropping him to a 41-39 record overall in Tallahassee (23-30 in ACC play).
ESPN first reported the firing, with FSU president Richard McCollough informing Andrea Adelson of the news.
Norvell, who led FSU to an undefeated regular season and ACC Championship in 2023, was unable to consistently produce success on the field for the Seminoles. Under him, FSU posted a losing record in four of six full seasons (in addition to being on track to do so again this season), suffered its first-ever loss to an FCS program, lost to Duke for the first time in program history, suffered the worst bowl loss in program and college football history and in 2024, strung together a historically bad (by multiple metrics) 2-10 season.
A number that sits as the third-largest in college football history, his buyout is 85% of whatever compensation is remaining on his contract, which as of Nov. 1, is approximately $50.3 million
Florida State will now begin its search to hire its 14th full-time coach in program history.
