Denton Mateychuk and Kent Johnson scored goals 2:54 apart to pull the Blue Jackets (5-6-0) within 3-2 in the third period, but Mark Jankowski's goal for Carolina 16 seconds into the period was the difference. Hurricanes goalie Pyotr Kochetkov (24 saves) didn't allow another goal despite the Jackets pushing late with their net empty for a 6-on-5 advantage.
Mateychuk cut it to 3-1 at 6:56 of the third to extend his goal streak to three straight games and Johnson followed by capping a power play at 9:50 for his seventh goal of the season. There just wasn't a tying goal in the cards for the Blue Jackets, who got 24 saves from goalie Jet Greaves in his first game since taking the loss Oct. 20 against the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Jordan Martinook and Logan Stankoven scored the first two goals for the Hurricanes (11-2-2), who've won four of their past five games and sit comfortably atop the Metropolitan Division with 24 points and a cushion of eight points over the New Jersey Devils in second.
The Blue Jackets will wrap up their first multi-game road trip of the season Oct. 31 in Dallas.
