Archive of Our Own Could Be Down for Up to 4 Weeks After Going Dark for Emergency Maintenance

· IGN

Popular fanfiction site Archive of Our Own, commonly known as AO3, went down for maintenance early this morning. Now, the website is claiming it may take up to a month to come back online.

At 3:26am ET, AO3_Status acknowledged that the site was down for maintenance. Two hours later, the account claimed maintenance was expected "to take at least 12 hours." Then, at 1:59pm, a new post revealed that service restoration will take around two weeks, but it "could be up to" four, leaving dedicated readers without their favorite fanfic destination for the forseeable future.

The latest status update quickly went viral on X, picking up over 7 million views and 140,000 likes. Readers are shocked, to say the least, and have promptly exploded into an apocalyptic frenzy across social media.

"WE ARE DOOMED" replied one user. "worst tweet in the history of this app. delete" said another.

Some dismayed fans are trying to report the issue up the political chain of command. “SOMEONE DO SOMETHING” says @uhbucky, tagging official government accounts like the CIA, FBI, and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, and picking up over 20,000 likes.

While AO3 does undergo regular maintenance, the site rarely goes offline for more than 24 hours. However, the maintenance does appear to be becoming more regular. Just this past March, the service went down for three days following reports of a database server issue.

The Archive team has not revealed any information about the incident that prompted the maintenance period, or what exactly changed to extend it for such a long period. AI agents have been posing a new threat to online communities, and just last week, an exploited PHP vulnerability led to government demands for sites using PHP to implement extra security. It’s possible the PHP vulnerability has some connection to AO3’s current outage.

As for what readers can expect over the next couple of weeks, the AO3 status page explains that the team is 'hopeful' they’ll be able to launch a 'degraded' version of the archive while the full version undergoes maintenance. This would likely be a read-only version of the service, which hosted over 18 million works at the time it went down.

Users are still able to access any fanfic they’ve downloaded locally to their personal devices. Readers can also read their favorite fanfiction by inputting URLs into platforms like the Wayback Machine. However, as some users note, both of these options prevent authors from getting credit for impressions, Kudos, or comments during the maintenance period.
