Giants GM impressed by young QB performance
The New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen expressed satisfaction with J.J. McCarthy’s recent performance. After joining the team in a trade with the Minnesota Vikings, McCarthy has had the opportunity to play as the starting quarterback. His performance in the Giants’ 27–21 win over the Houston Texans caught Schoen’s attention.

Mandatory Credit: Vincent Carchietta-Imagn Images“Yeah, it’s a really good room, I would say it’s uh probably one of the stronger ones in the league. Unfortunately, Jaxson won’t be back this year. And then to have, you know, the two young guys with Jaxson and J.J., that uh, you know, both talented players, I mean it’s a good position to be in. It’s a good position to be in and hopefully JJ and Jameis can stay healthy throughout the rest of this year and um, you know, JJ can continue to play at a high level. He did a really good job on Sunday, was impressed with how he played,” Schoen said during the interview.
The Giants were interested in McCarthy before acquiring him from the Vikings. The team evaluated him extensively during the 2024 NFL Draft and later traded for him, sending the Vikings a 2027 fifth-round draft pick. Schoen’s comments reflected the team’s interest in McCarthy dating back to that evaluation process.
Against the Texans, McCarthy completed 20 of 28 passes for 252 yards. He did not throw a touchdown or an interception in the 27–21 victory. Schoen said he was impressed with McCarthy’s play and expressed hope he could maintain that level for the remainder of the season.
McCarthy’s role has become more important following Jaxson Dart’s season-ending injury against the Los Angeles Rams. Before the injury, Dart had played two games, recording 250 passing yards and three touchdowns without an interception. Schoen said Dart would not return this year. Although Dart has returned to quarterback meetings, he is still recovering from the injury.
With Dart unavailable, the Giants are relying on McCarthy and veteran quarterback Jameis Winston. Winston has started six games for the Giants over the past two years. In five of those games, New York either held a lead or was tied in the fourth quarter. The team has a 2-1-1 record in games Winston started, reflecting his role in keeping the Giants competitive.
The Giants have also extended Winston’s contract for two years and $13 million, keeping him under contract through the 2028 season. His experience gives the team another option at quarterback alongside McCarthy.
With Dart ruled out for the year, McCarthy’s performance and Winston’s availability will continue to shape the Giants’ quarterback situation.
