Julian Ward's first task as sporting director of the club will be to address the giant midfield elephant in the room at Anfield.
For the last few years, Liverpool have been trying to fill the void left behind by Fabinho back in 2023 when he departed the club.
Liverpool have tried to sign so many defensive midfielders over the years to no avail. It started with Aurelien Tchouameni who joined Real Madrid.
Then there was the whole Romeo Lavia and Moises Caicedo debacle. We all know how that ended as both of them joined Chelsea and Liverpool brought in Wataru Endo.
After that, Martin Zubimendi was a target but he preferred the mountains of San Sebastian before joining Mikel Arteta at Arsenal.
Liverpool's ambitions to buy a midfielder
In the meantime, Liverpool have adapted. Ryan Gravenberch has filled in the no.6 position. Alexis Mac Allister has played there as well but it's clear that the Reds are still lacking a strong defensive presence.
The emergence of Trey Nyoni has been a blessing. His ability to read the game and be a deep-lying playmaker does give Liverpool a new edge.
Andoni Iraola's side play better football when the teenager is on the pitch.
But Liverpool do have a transfer target as well. The club are huge admirers of Lamine Camara and it looks like they could be making a move to sign him in the January window.
There was a promise made to the Senegalese international that Liverpool would return for his services in 2027. Now that is quickly approaching and there's a good chance that either in the winter or the summer window an offer will be made for Camara.
Liverpool eyeing another midfielder in Aleksey Batrakov
Now, Camara isn't the only target on the club's radar.
In fact, Liverpool are also interested in Aleksey Batrakov of Galatasaray. That's according to Artur Petrosyan, who claims on X that the Reds have started to make some serious moves to sign Batrakov by now 'watching him closely.'
A creative playmaker who covers a lot of ground, Batrakov is regarded as a special talent. While he plays as a midfielder, some have likened his potential trajectory to Khvicha Kvaratskhelia after he made the move away from Russia.
So far, Batrakov has four goal contributions in 10 games for Galatasaray. He is only 21-years-old, and he plays with the energy and enthusiasm needed to be an important figure in Iraola's midfield.
The club are clearly taking a special interest in him, which means he is someone you need to keep a close eye on as well.
