The New York Giants will play an incredibly important game in Week 7. New York faces off against Houston in what should feel like a must-win game for both teams. The Giants plan to start J.J. McCarthy at quarterback against the Texans, but does that mean he is their new starter ahead of Jameis Winston?

NFL insider Ian Rapoport shared some interesting details about New York’s quarterback plan in a recent article before Week 7.
“Sources told NFL Network that Sunday’s game against the vaunted Texans defense is not a one-week tryout for McCarthy, the former Minnesota Vikings first-round pick who was traded to the Giants last month,” Rapoport wrote on Sunday.

It appears that McCarthy will have a real chance to win New York’s starting job. That could mean he gets another start next week regardless of how New York fares against Houston. The Texans do boast one of the league’s best defenses, so it may be difficult to fully assess McCarthy on Sunday.
This all comes after head coach John Harbaugh made some cryptic comments about McCarthy over the past few days.
Harbaugh said “life is day-to-day, minute-to-minute” earlier this week when asked if the Giants plan to stick with McCarthy long term.
“There’s really no guarantees,” Harbaugh said. “I would never say that anything is permanent in football or life. That’s the plan going forward.”
McCarthy certainly showed promise during limited action in Week 6. He threw for 243 passing yards with 26 rushing yards in just the fourth quarter last week. McCarthy’s ability to scramble and throw the ball deep down the field could open up new possibilities for New York.
It will be fascinating to see how McCarthy plays against Houston in a critical game for both organizations.
Giants at Texans kicks off at 1 p.m. ET from NRG Stadium in Houston.
