The Duke of Sussex, 42, appeared on GQ’s interview series “One More Question,” where he addressed the years-long rift with his brother Prince William.
“For me, there’s enough drama in the world and enough drama in people’s lives to continue with issues with family,” Harry said in the interview recorded late last month with GQ ’s Zach Baron.
“People look at us, and go ‘How are you going to work it out?’” he shared, referring to a possible end to the siblings’ fractured relationship. “Some people don’t want it to work out. I want it to work out.”
Harry added: “With everything else that’s going on in the world, the most important thing is to reconcile. That’s the key point.”
A spokesperson for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex clarified that Harry’s comments were “absolutely not intended as a swipe at his brother or any other member of his family,” Hello! reported.
“The comment was made in a general context and was not directed at his family in any way.”
Communication issues
Not only has Harry not spoken to William but the outlet reported that King Charles hasn’t seen his younger son in person since Harry, Meghan and their children, Archie and Lilibet, moved back to the U.K. in August — though they are believed to have spoken on the phone.
Harry noted how “sibling disagreements” and “broken relationships between kids and parents” are a “massively relatable issue.”
“As a 42-year-old man with two kids, a boy and a girl, you start to look back at your past and your parents as to what you have carried from them, what they’ve handed over to you, what you want to take on and what you don’t,” he added.
But despite the little communication between dad and son, and zero communication between the brothers, the “Spare” author admitted he moved his family back to the U.K. to be “closer” to the other royals.
“To be back closer to my family and to be back on U.K. soil for longer than a few days or a week here or there… it’s nice to be back,” Harry said.
The move back to England
Harry revealed that he wanted to create “opportunities for the family,” and getting his children to experience another environment was a big part of that.
“Being able to put the kids in a British school has meant a lot to me. I didn’t know how important it was to me,” the Duke admitted.
“I always thought it was gonna be something that I would try and do or that we would try and do, but now they’ve been in school for two weeks,” he said.
Harry revealed the kids are “loving” their new school and have been able to gain “a whole different experience.”
He added: “Don’t worry, I’m not criticizing American schools. But I think for kids at 7 and 5 to be able to have that comparison and to have two completely different cultural experiences is so important today.”
A new day has dawned
Harry also said he and Meghan have a “different attitude” to living in England now compared to seven years ago.
“Our attitude has changed,” he revealed. “I think once you’ve been through it, once you’ve been able to talk about it and raise awareness to it, then people see it for what it is, which makes the environment slightly easier.”
He noted that some “necessary battles” have been fought, but they now hope to “draw a line” under the conflict, and leave it “behind us” for the “greater good.”
When asked if that “would” could be repaired, Harry was optimistic.
“Yeah, of course, I think every wound … look, scars stick around forever but … what your perception is and what your mindset is to these things that have happened, certainly letting go of the past, that’s something that I would encourage everybody to do.”
