Ohio HC Ryan Day reports QB’s injury update

Ohio State’s 2026 season took a major turn on October 17 when starting quarterback Julian Sayin suffered a significant injury to his throwing arm during a hard-fought 19-15 road victory over Indiana.

Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback Julian Sayin (10) leaves the field in a sling following the 19-15 win over the Indiana Hoosiers in the NCAA football game at Memorial Stadium Stadium in Bloomington, Ind. on Oct. 17, 2026.

Julian Sayin entered 2026 as one of the more accomplished young quarterbacks in the country. After transferring from the Alabama portal and developing behind the scenes, he took over as Ohio State’s starter in 2025 as a redshirt freshman. That season he threw for 3,610 yards and 32 touchdowns with a nation-leading completion percentage near 77%, finished fourth in Heisman Trophy voting, and earned Big Ten Freshman of the Year honors.

With just over eight minutes remaining in the fourth quarter of the Indiana game, Sayin dropped back on first-and-10 near the Indiana 38-yard line. Indiana defensive lineman Mario Landino beat the edge protection and sacked him. The hit pinned Sayin’s right (throwing) arm against his body in an awkward position as he tried to throw.

Sayin went to the ground wincing, was evaluated on the field by medical staff, and was unable to grip the football normally. He left for the locker room and later returned to the sideline with his right arm in a sling. He did not re-enter the game.

Immediately after the game, Ryan Day said Sayin would “probably be out for several weeks.” On the Monday following the game, Day reiterated that the absence would be at least several weeks while medical testing continued, and he declined to speculate further. The tone shifted significantly on Tuesday, October 20, after practice.

“Based on the nature of the injury, we are putting together a plan for him not being available for the regular season and then also him not being available for the postseason.” Day said. “We’re not going to put any timeline on his recovery, but he is out indefinitely. If he’s not able to return this fall, then we’re putting a plan together for that as well. That’s the update I have right now,” he added.

As of October 21, 2026, there is still no official timeline or detailed medical update beyond Day’s comments. But Day confirmed his “indefinite” unavailability means he will remain out for this season.
