Mandel Nallo says patience learned from debut loss paid off at UFC Edmonton

· Yahoo Sports

Mandel Nallo met the media Saturday after his win over Nate Landwehr at UFC Fight Night 291.

Nallo (15-4 MMA, 1-1 UFC) put it all over Landwehr (18-9 MMA, 5-7 UFC) early and often to open up the main card at Rogers Place in Edmonton, Alberta. Rather than rush a finish, he went into the second round to put him away after battering him with leg kicks, as well as punches to the head.

The win was Nallo’s first in the UFC. His debut in the promotion was a loss to Jai Herbert that had Nallo on the offensive early, only to get clipped and finished moments later when he got too aggressive. He said he learned from that loss in Winnipeg in front of his home Canadian fans so he could turn it around in Edmonton.

Nallo highlights, UFC Edmonton

Nallo key quotes, UFC Edmonton

“It was better than the last one, we’ll say that. Obviously, there are things to improve on. But it’s just encouraging that technically, I can always hang. This one and the last one, I don’t look like a fish (out of water) in there. I’m kind of the man in there until someone takes it from me.”

“The theme of this fight camp was to understand how damaging I am, how good I am at hurting people – and to not force those engagements. Luckily for me, Nate is a guy who forces those engagements, so it allowed me a lot of opportunity to do the damage I need to do. (The game plan was) be patient, don’t force anything – because in the last fight, when I lost my patience, that’s when I lost the fight.”

“(I want) more names like Nate ‘The Train’ and Jai Herbert – keep the ball rolling in that way and get another fight soon. … There’s nothing that can keep me away from (UFC 336). If that’s the case, everybody come party in Toronto.”
