Barcelona are approaching the first El Clasico of the season, with tensions between Real Madrid and Spain’s refereeing establishment becoming an increasingly prominent issue.

According to Cadena SER, concerns have emerged within refereeing circles over the atmosphere surrounding Real Madrid’s matches, with fears that criticism from the club and its entourage could intensify in the two weeks leading up to the meeting.

The latest controversy follows Vinicius Jr.’s red card against Villarreal, a decision that has fuelled further debate over refereeing standards.

SER reports that officials are concerned about the reaction to the dismissal and what they see as an increasingly hostile environment around match officials.

With Barcelona and Real Madrid preparing to meet in a fixture where every major decision attracts scrutiny, the dispute has added more tension ahead of the Clasico.

Real Madrid refereeing controversy raises concerns

The report centres on the perception within refereeing circles that pressure surrounding Real Madrid could grow as the Barcelona match approaches.

Jose Mourinho and his coaching staff, for that matter, have also come under scrutiny, with critics questioning the way the club’s representatives have handled their disagreements with officials.

Former referee Iturralde Gonzalez offered his assessment of the situation, arguing that the criticism risks shaping how Madrid supporters view refereeing decisions.

“They want to send a false narrative, to make their fans believe they’re being wronged and that everyone is against Real Madrid,” Gonzalez explains.

He also linked the current atmosphere to the unresolved Negreira case and Mourinho’s history of creating pressure around officials.

“With the Negreira issue unresolved, the noise is even greater. The Clasico is in two weeks, and we have a professional at creating tension like Mr. Mourinho.

“He’s done it in Portugal, in Italy, and in England; he plays with those tactics. It’s nothing new.”

Barcelona must prepare for a heated El Clasico

Barcelona have not made the dispute their immediate priority, as Hansi Flick has been focused on his team’s European commitments, including the trip to Galatasaray, rather than entering the public argument surrounding Madrid and the refereeing committee.

However, the issue is likely to remain part of the build-up to El Clasico as attention shifts towards the encounter.

Barcelona will want the focus to remain on football, while the club’s staff will be aware that contentious decisions can quickly become a major talking point in such a high-profile fixture.

The concerns, described by SER, do not establish that referees will be influenced by external pressure, although it is also true that the officials will face intense scrutiny in the wake of this dispute.
