The quarterback situation gets a bit thinner in Week 6, especially with four teams on bye this weekend. Both Joe Burrow and Jared Goff are among the quarterbacks unavailable due to these byes, and additionally, several players who are usually considered automatic starters now face legitimate concerns regarding their efficiency, protection, or the overall condition of their offenses, and this week presents a valuable opportunity to differentiate between a quarterback’s reputation and their actual opportunity.
Start ‘Em
Start of the Week: Jordan Love, GB vs. DAL
Jeff Hanisch-Imagn ImagesThe most intriguing aspect of Green Bay’s passing game has shifted from whether Jordan Love can deliver a strong fantasy performance to just how high his potential can rise when the Packers require him to throw the ball. Week 5 provided the clearest insight into his capabilities so far. Love completed 25 of 31 passes for 367 yards and two touchdowns against Chicago, marking his best passing performance of the season, and he has now achieved two touchdown passes in each of his last five games, totaling 10 touchdowns and only three interceptions over the first five weeks.
The upcoming matchup against Dallas presents an ideal opportunity for Love to continue this trend. The Cowboys have been one of the more lenient defenses against fantasy quarterbacks, while Green Bay possesses enough explosive talent on the perimeter to attack rather than rely solely on their running game, and it’s important because Love has already demonstrated that he doesn’t need to contribute rushing yards to reach QB1 status. His fantasy value is driven by his passing efficiency, touchdowns, and big plays, and this matchup provides a realistic chance for all three to manifest simultaneously.

Additionally, there is less concern about game script compared to some of Green Bay’s earlier victories. Dallas has enough offensive weapons to keep the Packers passing well into the second half, making Love one of the most appealing non-elite quarterback starts for Week 6.
Kirk Cousins, LV vs. BUF
Kirk Cousins may not appear to be a reliable fantasy option at first glance, especially after Las Vegas was blown out by New England last week. However, this matchup against Buffalo could be intriguing. Despite the Raiders’ 45-17 loss, Cousins managed to throw for 243 yards and one touchdown before Fernando Mendoza came in late in the game. Raiders coach Klint Kubiak has confirmed that Cousins remains the starter, and his season statistics are notable: he has accumulated 1,268 yards and 12 touchdown passes over five games.
Facing Buffalo may change the dynamic for Las Vegas. The Raiders may find themselves needing to pass more often, especially after the Bills recently played a thrilling 37-34 game against the Rams, and Buffalo has shown vulnerabilities against aerial attacks, making opposing quarterbacks more appealing in high-volume situations. Also, Brock Bowers provides Cousins with a target capable of turning short passes into significant gains.
While this doesn’t instantly elevate Cousins to elite fantasy quarterback status, it’s important for managers to be aware that turnovers could be part of the equation.
Jameis Winston, NYG vs. NO
Brad Penner-Imagn ImagesThere are safer options for fantasy football managers than trusting Jameis Winston, but safety isn’t always what they need from a one-week quarterback replacement. In a recent game against Washington, New York put the ball in Winston’s hands 54 times, resulting in 326 passing yards and three touchdowns in a 27-27 tie. He also contributed 27 rushing yards, finishing the week as one of fantasy football’s highest-scoring quarterbacks, despite losing a fumble.
While expecting another 54 attempts would be unrealistic, the key takeaway is that the Giants are comfortable letting Winston be aggressive. With Malik Nabers and Isaiah Likely as strong options in the intermediate passing game, Winston won’t have to rely solely on low-percentage deep shots. New Orleans is coming to New York after allowing more than 30 points per game in the first five weeks of the season. While this doesn’t guarantee another three-touchdown performance, it does give the passing game the opportunity to remain aggressive rather than revert to a low-volume strategy.
Although there is always a risk with Winston, the combination of volume and a favorable matchup this week enhances his potential upside.
Sit ‘Em
Sit of the Week: Justin Herbert, LAC at KC
Mark Konezny-Imagn ImagesAt some point, draft position is no longer a valid reason to keep a player in the lineup. Justin Herbert has reached that point. In Week 5, Denver limited him to 121 passing yards, with one touchdown and one interception, while also forcing a late fumble in a 23-17 loss for the Chargers. Los Angeles is now 0-5, and the issues extend far beyond just one poor performance. Herbert has already amassed nine turnovers in five games, including seven interceptions.
The situation is further complicated by the offensive line. Injuries have forced the Chargers to rely heavily on inexperienced blockers. Now, they travel to Kansas City to face a defense that comes off its bye week with extra preparation time, and this sets up a challenging scenario for a quarterback who has increasingly struggled when pressured in the pocket. Kansas City has proven tough for opposing quarterbacks, allowing only four passing touchdowns in their first four games.
While the Chargers may eventually stabilize their offense, fantasy managers should be cautious about starting Herbert in Week 6. Doing so requires betting on a turnaround against one of the most unforgiving opponents they could face.
Sam Darnold, SEA at DEN
Seattle scored 29 points against San Francisco, which typically would be enough to keep their quarterback in the fantasy discussion, but the way those points were achieved has not alleviated the broader concerns heading into Thursday night’s game.
Quarterback Sam Darnold has made seven turnover-worthy plays this season, while the Seahawks have committed eight turnovers over their last three games. Now, Seattle is up against a Denver defense that recorded five sacks last Sunday and possesses enough pass-rushing talent to make any mistakes significantly more costly. Playing in Denver also presents a different challenge compared to playing at home against San Francisco. The short week reduces preparation time, and the Broncos can apply pressure without relying on constant blitzing. Additionally, this game does not seem likely to require Seattle to pass excessively.
Darnold can generate solid numbers if the Seahawks provide him with adequate protection, but fantasy managers need to weigh their options between quarterbacks rather than simply assessing whether a player can survive the game.
Jalen Hurts, PHI vs. CAR
Bill Streicher-Imagn ImagesA home game against Carolina would typically be the kind of matchup fantasy managers would look for when considering Jalen Hurts, but the current state of Philadelphia’s offense as they enter Week 6 provides little reason to expect a return to the old fantasy production everyone relied on.
In his last game against Jacksonville, Hurts managed only 220 passing yards and one touchdown on 40 attempts. He also carried the ball twice for just two yards, marking his third consecutive game with fewer than 14 fantasy points. The decline in rushing production is particularly concerning. Hurts has usually compensated for lackluster passing performances with designed runs and goal-line touchdowns, but this advantage diminishes significantly when Philadelphia is not utilizing him in that way.
Injuries have further complicated the situation, as DeVonta Smith is dealing with a hamstring issue, Saquon Barkley has also been battling a hamstring injury, and the offensive line is undergoing significant changes.
Facing Carolina alone is not a compelling reason to start Hurts. Managers in deeper leagues might find it difficult to sit him, but in standard one-quarterback leagues, a player like Jordan Love or even a more favorable streaming option should be strongly considered. Relying on Hurts simply because of his past performance overlooks what the Philadelphia offense has looked like over the last three weeks.
Five weeks of data is no longer a small sample size.
