A six-year-old Virginia boy swore at a school worker and threatened to fight police officers after shooting a teacher during class.

The then-first-grader, identified in court only as J.T., is seen on body-cam footage challenging police who rushed to Richneck Elementary School in Newport News, Va., on Jan. 6, 2023, following the shooting.

The disturbing, expletive-filled video, obtained by the Virginian-Pilot , shows the boy being restrained by reading specialist Amy Kovac, who ran into the classroom after her colleague Abby Zwerner was shot in front of 16 students in the Grade 1 class.

‘We have the shooter’

“Both y’all want a f***ing piece of me, b***h?!” the boy challenges the officers, according to the footage taken from Officer Brian Torrez’s body camera.

Kovac tell the boy to “stop,” prompting J.T. to reply, “F*** you, b****.”

The video shows police finding a 9 mm Taurus handgun on the floor.

“We have the shooter,” another officer says on the police radio.

“I told the [assistant principal] that there was a threat earlier about it,” Kovac tells officers, who ask the boy’s age.

“He is six years old,” she says. “He has been on a modified schedule. His mother is to pick him up at 2:30. This is his first week without his mother coming to school with him.”

Kovac says she called 911 after hearing a gunshot from down the hallway, rushed into the classroom and saw “blood” on Zwerner, who collapsed in the school office, the outlet reported.

“F*** you, b****,” J.T. tells her again, flashing a middle finger at the woman holding him.

‘Small handcuffs’

One of the officers asks if they have “small handcuffs” for the shooter, before Officer Torrez warns his fellow cops and Kovac not to touch the child’s hands, which appeared to have “gun residue” on them.

J.T. tells the officer he “stole” the gun from his mother before threatening the cops again.

“If you want a piece of me, come get it on, b****. I don’t care if you call backup. I don’t care if I go to jail, b****,” he tells the officer.

At that point, J.T. punched Kovac in the face, sending her glasses flying but the incident was only heard on the body-cam footage as the view was blocked by Officer Torrez’s hands, according to the Virginian-Pilot .

The boy had taken the gun from his mom’s purse on the morning of the shooting and fired a single shot at Zwerner from about three metres away during an afternoon reading class, according to the outlet.

The bullet struck the teacher’s hand, but a large fragment ended up in her chest, not far from her heart.

Footage shown at trial

The three minutes of body-cam footage were shown during May’s trial of former Richneck assistant principal Ebony Parker, who was facing eight felony child neglect counts and accused of ignoring several clear warnings that the boy had a gun in school that day.

All charges were dismissed days later before the defence made its case.

Zwerner, who was severely injured in the shooting, was awarded $10 million following a civil trial against Parker in November 2025.

The child’s mother, Deja Nicole Taylor, 29, was released from state prison in February after serving time for child neglect and lying on a background-check form when she bought the gun.

The boy, now 9 or 10, is still living in Newport News, but is in the custody of his great-grandfather.
