A team of divers are providing closure to the family of a British Columbia man, who disappeared more than two decades ago.

George Franklin “Frank” Davis was 40 when he was reported missing from his home near Creston, B.C., on July 29, 2004.

Last month, Adventures With Purpose , a volunteer group of divers from the U.S., located the man’s vehicle near an old ferry landing on the Kootenay River near his home.

The search-and-recovery dive team dedicates themselves to helping families of missing loved ones and documents their movement on YouTube.

Since 2019, they’ve provided answers and closure to about 45 families.

Davis discovery

On Sept. 24, the group, which documents their searches for missing people and vehicles believed to be underwater on YouTube, found a submerged vehicle that matched Davis’ 1981 Chrysler LeBaron.

One of the divers, Byron Leisek, dove down and confirmed the licence plate and noted “human remains inside.”

The vehicle and Davis’ remains were “successfully brought to the surface in an operation led by the RCMP Underwater Recovery Team” on Sept. 28, according to the cold-case divers.

Creston RCMP confirmed a vehicle was found in the Kootenay River near an area known as “the old ferry landing.”

At long last

“It was numbing at first,” Davis’ brother, Reid Davis, told Global News about the discovery and how he believed he might never know what happened all those years ago.

“After so long, you kind of think that you’re not going to have this moment ever, and then just a flood of memories again, all these things that you kind of put away over the years.”

The group added that Davis’ case is the first of many the team is working on in Canada this fall.

“While formal identification remains pending through forensic analysis by the BC Coroners Service, investigators and the family believe the recovered remains are those of Davis,” they added.

It is unclear how Davis ended up in the river, but authorities say they don’t believe the death is suspicious and preliminary findings show no indication of foul play.

An investigation is ongoing pending forensic testing and confirmation of the remains through the B.C. Coroner’s Service.
