The 24-time major champion won his seventh Beijing Open title when Alex de Minaur retired with a left thigh injury while trailing 7-6, 1-0 in Tuesday’s final.
It was the 102nd career title for Djokovic, trailing only Jimmy Connors (109) and Roger Federer (103).
Djokovic, who advanced to the final when Daniil Medvedev was disqualified for hitting a fan with a ball, improved to a perfect 34-0 at the Beijing Open.
The previous record for wins at a single tournament without a loss was Rafael Nadal’s 31 at Roland Garros.
After losing in the first round of the U.S. Open to Mariano Navone, Djokovic won Beijing by topping Alexander Zverev, Medvedev and de Minaur in his final three matches as he bids to qualify for the ATP Finals in Turin.
Zverev, meantime, is poised to become the new world No. 1 before the year ends after Jannik Sinner announced he was shutting it down for the season for knee recovery.
Zverev and Djokovic are in the same half of the draw at the Masters 1000 event in Shanghai, while world No. 3 Carlos Alcaraz is also in the event. Alcaraz on Tuesday won the Japan Open, defeating Jiri Lehecka 7-6, 6-4 for his first title since February.
