Jorge Jesus says Ronaldo will decide his Portugal future

Cristiano Ronaldo remains welcome in the Portugal squad, with manager Jorge Jesus leaving the decision over his international future in the 41-year-old’s hands.

Ronaldo left Portugal’s Nations League camp after being left out of the starting XI against Denmark, having previously been an unused substitute in the win over Norway. The decision followed his frustration at being asked to warm up during the Norway game without eventually being introduced.

Jesus, who also coached Ronaldo at Al-Nassr, said the veteran forward can return whenever he chooses.

“If he wants to, he’ll return to the national team,” Jesus said. “We can talk before the next call-up, but Cris is the one who’s going to decide.”

The Portugal boss also stressed that Ronaldo should have control over how he eventually brings his international career to an end.

“Cristiano should end his time in the national team the way he wants, he’s the one who will decide how he wants it,” Jesus added.

Ronaldo had previously said he would explain his reasons for leaving the camp “in due course”, having scored 146 goals in 234 appearances for Portugal. He remains the country’s record goalscorer and most-capped player.

Gonçalo Ramos has taken advantage of Ronaldo’s absence, scoring in each of his three starts during the current run of fixtures. Portugal also secured their place in the Nations League quarter-finals with a 2-1 victory over Norway, moving six points clear of Denmark with two Group A4 matches remaining.

Ronaldo’s Portugal team-mates have also indicated that he would receive a warm welcome if he decides to return.

“Cristiano is our captain, the best player Portugal has ever had,” João Cancelo told RTP. “Things will certainly end in the best way [with him].”

Nuno Mendes added: “If Cris returns, we’ll be here to receive him with open arms.”

Portugal next face Denmark on 14 November before travelling to Wales three days later, giving Ronaldo and Jesus time to discuss the situation before the next international squad is selected.
