Jahmyr Gibbs, Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams, and Sam LaPorta are an elite group of playmakers. St. Brown, Williams, and, more recently, Gibbs have signed long-term deals. But LaPorta is, unfortunately, a different story.
According to Ian Rapoport for ESPN, the Lions and their star tight end have not agreed to a new contract, and the two sides have split off in their talks, setting LaPorta up to hit the open market after the 2026 NFL season.
Lions' Sam LaPorta set to hit free agency after contract talks fall apart
"The Detroit Lions and star tight end Sam LaPorta have broken off contract talks, sources told NFL Network, after attempting to work out a long-term deal for the first few weeks of the season," Rapoport reports.
The Lions have been trying to sign LaPorta to a long-term deal this offseason, and those talks lingered into the regular season.
Unfortunately for the Lions, and the fans hoping to keep LaPorta long-term, those talks have fallen apart, and he's now poised to hit free agency after this season.

Of course, there's plenty of time between now and the offseason for the Lions to figure something out with LaPorta to keep him around long-term.
It could be agreeing to his likely lofty contract demands, or finally meeting a middle ground at some point later this season. The Lions could also consider a franchise tag, though it's unclear whether they'll use it.
But, as of now, heading into Week 4 against the Carolina Panthers on Sunday Night Football, LaPorta is not going to sign a long-term deal with the Lions.
LaPorta is one step closer to hitting the open market, though considering how valuable he is to the Lions, their front office will likely keep trying to keep him long-term, even though these mid-season talks have fallen through.
