Grimsley, ranked No. 25 in the USA TODAY Super 25, will travel to Virginia to take on Varina, ranked 11th in the USA TODAY Super 15 East Region in a matchup between two of the region's unbeaten teams. The Whirlies enter at 5-0, while the Blue Devils are 4-0-1 after a tie with Oscar Smith earlier this season.
And with two nationally ranked teams meeting in a rematch of last year's matchup, there's plenty at stake in Richmond.
Grimsley enters Friday night riding a 36-game winning streak and looking to continue its run as one of North Carolina's premier high school football programs. The Whirlies have been dominant defensively this season, allowing just 16 points through their first five games, including shutouts in each of their last two victories. Grimsley most recently defeated Western Guilford 63-0.
Varina has built a reputation as one of Virginia's top programs and enters Friday's matchup ranked No. 1 in the state. The Blue Devils have surrendered just 54 points through five games and have won their last two games by a combined 73-13, including a 49-7 victory over Henrico last week.
The matchup also gives Varina an opportunity to avenge last season's meeting. Grimsley defeated the Blue Devils 21-14 in Greensboro on Oct. 4, 2025, in the first recorded meeting between the programs.
Friday's game features two of the region's stingiest defenses. Grimsley has allowed an average of just 3.2 points per game, while Varina has allowed 10.8 points per game entering the matchup.
Follow along for live updates between Grimsley and Varina, with kickoff slated for 7:30 p.m. ET at Varina High School in Richmond, Virginia.
