Louisville, Kentucky athletes ineligible after Court of Appeals ruling

A group of more than three dozen athletes from the Class of 2022 who took the NCAA to court in Louisville for a fifth year of eligibility got some bad news Oct. 2.

That's when a panel of three judges from the Kentucky Court of Appeals — Sara Walter Combs, Christopher McNeill and Will Moynahan — dissolved the injunction that deemed the athletes eligible to play.
"There was no loss of an opportunity for them because nothing changed, and the new rule did not, as the circuit court surmised, 'bar' them from doing anything they previously had a right to do," the judges wrote in their ruling. "Permitting the high school Class of 2022 to play a fifth season — the very relief the respondents were requesting in their joint motion for a 'temporary restraining order and preliminary injunction' — would disrupt the status quo."
The group of athletes includes two Louisville basketball players (Seth Trimble, LJ Wells), two Louisville football players (Jabari Mack, Kalib Perry) and one Kentucky football player (Alex Afari Jr.) — all of them now are ineligible.
Spokespeople for all three programs either declined to comment on the ruling when reached by The Courier Journal or did not respond before the time of publication.
