The Chicago Bears face an intriguing decision under center as they prepare for a high-stakes Week 4 clash against the New York Jets at Soldier Field. With star quarterback Caleb Williams nursing a hamstring strain suffered in Week 2 against the Minnesota Vikings, head coach Ben Johnson must choose between veteran Case Keenum and young backup Tyson Bagent to run the offense.

Keenum filled in admirably during Week 3, executing Johnson’s system cleanly in a victory over the Philadelphia Eagles. The 38-year-old veteran avoided turnovers, released the football in a rapid average of 2.41 seconds, and scored a key rushing touchdown. However, now that Bagent has fully cleared concussion protocol, momentum appears to be shifting toward the third-year passer earning the nod against New York.
Appearing on live television, NFL reporter James Palmer provided crucial insight into how the organization views Bagent internally. “Tyson Bagent is the backup. They do believe he is one of the 32 best quarterbacks in all of football. That’s how highly they think of him,” Palmer reported. “Caleb Williams has been living in the training room I’m told, it just seems a little too early for him still. Right now, it feels like it’s leaning towards Tyson Bagent right now, starting against the Jets.”

Bagent briefly saw action in Week 2 after Williams exited, completing 5 of 9 passes for 54 yards before suffering a concussion. Meanwhile, Williams threw for 407 yards over his first two starts before doctors diagnosed his injury as a three-to-four-week issue. Chicago clearly refuses to rush its franchise quarterback back onto the field prematurely.
Johnson hasn’t formally announced his decision, but leaning toward Bagent shows massive confidence in the backup’s upside and growth. Holding a solid 2-1 record on the season, Chicago has proven it can keep winning regardless of who takes the snaps, giving fans plenty of reason for optimism against the 1-2 Jets.
