The Atlanta Braves and Philadelphia Phillies meet again in the postseason, but this time, their season could end after only two games. The Braves (94-68) host the best-of-three NL Wild Card Series beginning Tuesday at Truist Park. The Braves won nine of 13 regular-season meetings and outscored Philadelphia 66-43. Still, the Phillies (88-74) have the October edge. They eliminated the Braves from the NLDS in both 2022 and 2023. Philadelphia needed a Game 162 victory just to claim the final NL playoff spot. Atlanta has had time to line up its rotation. Here are three predictions for the rivalry’s next chapter.
Chris Sale dominates Game 1
Chris Sale will give the Braves seven innings of one-run ball with nine strikeouts in a 4-1 victory Tuesday. The prediction asks him to reverse his postseason starting history. Sale owns a 7.24 ERA across seven playoff starts, but his 2026 work against the Phillies offers a stronger guide to this matchup. Atlanta’s ace posted a 2.08 ERA over 26 innings in four starts against Philadelphia this season.
Philadelphia’s lineup also enters the series searching for answers. It produced a .660 OPS in September and will be without injured infielder Luis Arraez. Jesus Luzardo is set to open Game 1, but he has made only one brief appearance since September 7 while recovering from shoulder inflammation. Rookie Andrew Painter will be available from the bullpen, leaving interim manager Don Mattingly with decisions to make once Luzardo exits. Sale will give the Braves the steadier start and the series lead.

Cristopher Sanchez forces a Game 3
The Phillies will answer Wednesday behind Cristopher Sanchez. Philadelphia recovered from a 9-19 start and needed Zack Wheeler to secure its playoff berth in Game 162. This team did not come that far to go quietly after one loss. Sanchez will face Atlanta’s Tyler Mahle in Game 2, and the Phillies will punch back to force a winner-take-all finale.
Expect Sanchez to hold the Braves to two runs over six innings before either Bryce Harper or Kyle Schwarber hits a late go-ahead homer in a 3-2 Phillies win. Mahle has pitched well since joining Atlanta, so Philadelphia will need Sanchez to keep the game close and limit the work for its struggling bullpen. One strong start and one timely swing will send the series to Game 3 on Thursday.
Ronald Acuna Jr. breaks open the decider
The Braves will take a lead in the decisive Game 3 before Ronald Acuna Jr. blasts a three-run homer to break it open. The 2023 NL MVP posted a 1.377 OPS in seven September matchups vs. the Phillies, giving Atlanta reason to trust him in the series’ biggest moment.
The Braves could start Grant Holmes or use an opener before turning to him. The Phillies are likely to start Aaron Nola, though Wheeler could also be available. However the pitching unfolds, Acuna’s swing will carry the Braves to their first playoff series win since 2021 and end their run of head-to-head postseason losses to the Phillies.
