Play-action passing a strength from Chiefs’ win against Dolphins
· Yahoo Sports
Although the Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Miami Dolphins 24-10 on Sunday to secure a 3-0 start, the game left much to be desired in terms of execution. Against a Miami squad thought to be among the league’s worst, very little seemed to go smoothly for Kansas City, whether on offense, defense, or special teams.

One area for the Chiefs to build on will be quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ success on play-action as running back Kenneth Walker demands more defensive attention. Next Gen Stats showed Mahomes averaging 15.3 yards per pass attempt on play-action on Sunday.

After the game, Mahomes was predictably down on the team’s tougher-than-expected offensive performance. He has no doubt, however, that Walker and rookie running back Emmett Johnson are making his job easier.
“It’s helping out a ton,” Mahomes remarked. “I think people look at the stats, and they see the touchdowns that Kenneth has and that Emmett’s been able to run the ball and the run game that we’re doing. But I don’t think they really understand how the play-action and the movements and stuff like that have really opened up in our offense.
“That’s a credit to them. That’s a credit to the offensive line firing off the ball on run and pass. That’s something we have to continue to get better at marrying as the year goes on. I thought we did a great job with that today — being better at the drop back passing game…It’s just about finishing drives and not making those little mistakes.”
