The SEC. While the Big Ten scuffled (see below), Greg Sankey's league continued to pile up impressive victories. Of course, some of those wins came against conference rivals, but in this case, that is not a bad thing. It speaks more to the depth of talent in the SEC. The top two teams in this week's poll are from the SEC and six of the first 11. All told, the SEC has nine teams in the Top 25. Oddly, no others receiving votes. Florida made the biggest leap this week, moving up 13 spots after an impressive win against Mississippi.
The Big Ten. It pains me to dis the conference that has won the last three College Football Playoff titles. But the league had a bad week, starting with Indiana almost losing at home against a Northwestern team that is obviously better than expected. That game forced me to drop the Hoosiers from No. 1 on my ballot. It got worse for the Big Ten, with Michigan losing to Iowa on a last-second touchdown pass that the Wolverines deserved. The Hawkeyes would be one of the pleasant surprises, but we know they are always good. Michigan got knocked out of the Top 25. So did Penn State, which blew a lead against Wisconsin at home. The Badgers scored two touchdowns in the final four minute to send 100,000 bummed Penn State fans to the nastiest traffic jam ever. The Big Ten is now down to six ranked teams.
No. 5 Ohio State at No. 14 Iowa (2:30 p.m, Saturday, CBS). One team, Iowa, plays great defense. The other, Ohio State, plays almost none. Can the Hawkeyes figure out a way to contain Jeremiah Smith? Illinois couldn't, allowing the Heisman Trophy front-runner to score four touchdowns in a performance that is one of the best I have ever seen by a receiver. Unreal. Hawkeyes coordinator Phil Parker will have a plan to at least slow Smith a bit. If Iowa wins this game, it has a clean path to a CFP berth. No Oregon or Indiana on the schedule. In fact, Ohio State is the last team the Hawkeyes will play a team that is currently ranked. Iowa should thank the Big Ten for a friendly schedule.
