The Green Bay Packers are battered, but are they also broken? Although Cheeseheads are perfectly aware of the injury-induced limitations their squad is currently dealing with, they still expected, nay demanded, a respectable showing in Thursday’s home opener. Paying fans voiced their vehement dissatisfaction via loud boos, much to the disappointment of Tucker Kraft. A lack of manpower only partially explains this troubling 1-3 start.

NFL analyst and retired defensive end Marcus Spears believes the Packers’ problems run deeper than who is on the field. He is concerned about this squad’s mindset following an alarming 35-14 loss versus the Atlanta Falcons.
“Watching this last night, to me, honestly felt like a team who didn’t want to play football anymore after a certain point in that game, and that’s the indictment I have on Matt LaFleur and this coaching staff,” “Swagu” said on ESPN’s “NFL Live.”

“I saw no galvanizing from anybody. I saw Micah Parsons talking to people, trying to get them going on defense, but when you looked at the disarray of this football team, beyond playing bad, they looked disinterested in playing, which is my biggest issue coming out of last night. Especially when Atlanta has been reeling, and they go to your house and put up 35 points?”

The Falcons deserve credit for flourishing in Michael Penix Jr.’s return, but Green Bay did itself no favors. A diminished offensive line that will press on without Zach Bako-Bewele for the rest of the year gave Jordan Love little support. The star quarterback should get blame, too, however, for he made some costly incompletions in Lambeau Field. Defensively, the Packers had no worthwhile response for Bijan Robinson and Drake London, who combined for 407 yards of total offense. It was just a mess.
Despite this debacle in Titletown, LaFleur will not make coaching changes at this time. The Packers will trust their personnel to flip the switch in a pivotal road game versus the Tampa Bay Buccaneers next Sunday. This franchise deserves the benefit of the doubt for setting a standard of consistently good football, but when people start questioning the team’s drive, it is easy to wonder if Green Bay is undergoing an identity crisis.
Luckily, it is only Week 3, and the Packers have a long break to diagnose and fix their most glaring problems.
