Cavaliers Reveal Full Plan for Unusual Training Camp Trip to Spain

The Cleveland Cavaliers hold Media Day on Sept. 28 and arrive in Spain the next day. By Sept. 30, they will be practicing at The Embassy in Andalusia, a training center in Fuengirola, under an itinerary the team released Thursday with its 21-player camp roster.
Sessions on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1 are set for 6 to 8 a.m. ET. On Oct. 2, practice runs 6 to 7 a.m. ET. The two-hour window comes back Oct. 3, and camp ends Sunday, Oct. 4, with a scrimmage at Martín Carpena Arena in Málaga in that same 6 to 8 a.m. ET slot.

Cavaliers Move Training Camp to Spain
Cavaliers coach Kenny Atkinson's first two camps in Cleveland were at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida. The team announced the move to Spain in early September.
Berni Rodríguez and José Calderón, who both played for Spain's national team, designed the place. The team's announcement put it at about 1,500 square meters with two courts built to FIBA and NBA standards. There is also a high-performance gym, space for rehabilitation, physiotherapy, and recovery, and video equipment for scouting and tactical work.
Calderón played for Cleveland in 2017-18 and reached the NBA Finals with the Cavaliers that season. Cavaliers President of Basketball Operations Koby Altman said in the announcement that having Calderón, "who has been instrumental in its development," as part of the organization made the trip a unique opportunity for the team.
Kenny Atkinson Has Experience at The Embassy
Atkinson has been there before. The NBA, FIBA, and the Spanish Basketball Federation ran Basketball Without Borders Europe at The Embassy's training center in Fuengirola from May 31 to June 3, 2024, and Atkinson, then an assistant with the Golden State Warriors, was one of the coaches named in the league's announcement.
Cavaliers Bring 21 Players to Training Camp
Four camp invitees make the trip with the rest of the roster: Rashaun Agee, Zack Austin, Curtis Jones, and Kadary Richmond. Tristan Enaruna, Riley Minix, and Ernest Udeh Jr. are in camp on two-way contracts.
Peyton Watson is in the group. Cleveland acquired him from the Denver Nuggets in a sign-and-trade and introduced him to the media this month. So is Mario Hezonja, back in the NBA after his time overseas. Donovan Mitchell, James Harden, Evan Mobley, and Jarrett Allen are back from a team that went 52-30 and reached the Eastern Conference Finals, where the New York Knicks swept Cleveland.
Cleveland Returns Home for Preseason
Once the scrimmage in Málaga is done, the Cavaliers return to the United States for three preseason games.
The first is Oct. 8 against the Boston Celtics at Rocket Arena, with tip-off set for 7 p.m. ET. Cleveland hosts the Orlando Magic on Oct. 11 and plays at Orlando on Oct. 13.
Opening night is Oct. 22, on the road against the Philadelphia 76ers. Two nights later, Cleveland plays its home opener against the Brooklyn Nets at Rocket Arena.
