The final months of Tom Brady‘s marriage to Gisele Bündchen took a physical toll on the seven-time Super Bowl champ, with coaches expressing concern about his appearance.

According to former Sports Illustrated reporter Lars Anderson‘s new biography, Brady: An American Story and the Price of Greatness, Brady, now 49, didn’t look healthy when he returned to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for a third season in 2022, after reversing his retirement decision.

Per Anderson’s account, his football career was putting a strain on his marriage to the supermodel.

“But when Brady walked into One Buc Place in July for the start of training camp, the sight of him – gaunt and cadaverous – was that of a man worn thin, reduced to bone and sorrow,” Anderson wrote in his book, per excerpts published by theDaily Mailon Friday, September 25.

“Nearly everyone in the building worried he was ill, maybe even battling a serious disease. His teammates estimated he’d lost close to 20 pounds, and the vibrancy of his spirit had dimmed like a candle running low on wax,” he wrote.

Buccaneers head coach Bruce Arians is quoted as saying, “For Tom to lose that much weight, on his frame, it was a lot.”

He added, “It was very clear that the reason for the weight loss was the stress from the personal issues he was dealing with.’

Another unnamed coach also told Anderson, “With all respect, he looked like a cancer patient with really good hair. He just seemed miserable, not even close to the Tom we all loved. He was so stressed.”

After teammate Ryan Jensen injured himself during training camp, another staffer said Brady seemed shaken. “I think that’s when he realized he’d made a horrible decision. He didn’t come back and risk adding more troubles to his marriage to get the [expletive] kicked out of him!” they recalled.

Shortly after, in August 2022, the former New England Patriots phenom asked for some time off to vacation with his family in Costa Rica — allegedly telling coach Clyde Christensen that he had “to take care of some personal things.” Christensen, meanwhile, “speculated that Brady may have been experiencing a form of serious psychological shock.”

Sources described the trip to Anderson as Brady’s “final, desperate attempt to keep his family together,” as “the bond he and Gisele had was flickering out like a match in a strong gust of wind, the fragile illusion of forever now fast fading.”

But he didn’t seem any better when he returned.

“Tom was an empty shell of who he was when he got back,” Christensen said, per the book. “There was no joy. Everything was hard work.”

In October 2022, the athlete and model, now 46, announced their separation, confirming their divorce had already been finalized after 13 years of marriage. They split after having two children together; son Benjamin, 16, and daughter Vivian, 13. Brady is also father to son Jack, who he shares with ex Bridget Moynahan.

After that third season with the Buccaneers, he announced in February 2023 that he was retiring from the game “for good” in a social media post.
