Trae Young spent close to eight seasons at the Atlanta Hawks, during which time he established himself as one of the league’s most lethal shooters. However, it came alongside very limited playoff success: the Hawks qualified for the postseason only thrice, with two first-round exits to show, including the 2021 Eastern Conference Finals run.

Now playing alongside Anthony Davis with AJ Dybantsa set to join the duo, Young recently spoke about why he only had limited success with the Hawks. Speaking to Michael Porter Jr. on Curious Mike, Young claimed that the lack of a teammate who could double-team was a major reason behind it.

“I mean, I have had a lot of great players and a lot of great teammates in Atlanta, I just, I don’t know if I’ve ever had a teammate that can draw double teams,” he said.

“It’s something about having a player that can double-team coz you are getting doubled and you throwing it, playing four on three. You know what I am saying? Like I’ve been the one getting doubled my first nine years in the league.”

Despite multiple cycles, the Hawks never established a long-term second star who consistently altered defensive coverages around Young. Atlanta’s most significant attempt to add a co-star came through the acquisition of Dejounte Murray.

While Murray was an All-Star-caliber player and secondary creator, the partnership paired two ball-dominant guards whose offensive strengths largely overlapped. Young played alongside several other productive players during his Hawks career, including Clint Capela, Bogdan Bogdanovic, John Collins, Jalen Johnson and Kristaps Porzingis.

However, there is little doubt that AD is not just a stark improvement on all of those names; he may as well become the focal point of the Wizards’ offense next season, assuming he remains fit.
