Troy Aikman Speaks Out on His ESPN Future

Earlier this month, Joe Buck signed a massive, new, six-year contract with ESPN worth more than $100 million. But what does that mean for his longtime broadcasting partner Troy Aikman, whom he’s been working with since they first teamed up at Fox in 2002?

Even Aikman, whose contract with ESPN is up at the end of this season, himself is in the dark. “I thought something would be done prior to the start of this season,” he admitted on the Sports Media Podcast. “I’ve never gone into the last year of a contract, ever, since I signed with the Dallas Cowboys. And so I thought it would be done. It’s not.”
He also admitted he’s unsure when things will be hashed out. “When it might get done, if it gets done, is anyone’s guess,” Aikman continued. “And it’s really not something that I’m putting a lot of energy into.”

The former NFL star has yet to talk with higher ups about his future and what Buck’s impressive deal means for him. “How much of that is my decision, I guess, is yet to be determined,” Aikman said. “Would I like to continue working with Joe Buck moving down the road? One hundred percent.”
Aikman and Buck became a broadcasting team at Fox Sports in 2002. After 20 years with the network, they both moved over to ESPN, where they now both host Monday Night Football.

“I came over in 2022 in large part to kind of help mend the relationship with ESPN and the NFL,” Aikman explained. “I feel like the reason that I was brought over … I fulfilled whatever obligations they were expecting from me. So much so that … the league now owns 10% of the network. So I would say the fence has been mended.”
Buck and Aikman will be back on the call for the September 21 Monday Night Football game between the New York Giants and Los Angeles Rams.
