The Atlanta Falcons faced a challenging quarterback decision in Week 2 against the Carolina Panthers due to injuries to Michael Penix Jr. and Tua Tagovailoa. As a result, Cooper Rush took first-team reps once again. Ian Rapoport reported on X that Penix was still not ready to return after recovering from his ACL injury.

However, the outlook for the quarterback position is rapidly improving. Looking ahead, Rapoport indicated that the Falcons might have a fully healthy quarterback room by this week, as Penix could potentially start as early as Thursday against the Green Bay Packers. Adam Schefter also reported on X that Penix, the Falcons’ preferred starter, is nearing his return and could make his 2026 debut on Thursday night.

Additionally, addressing roster rumors, Rapoport noted in a separate post that the Falcons have no plans to release Tua Tagovailoa, according to sources.

As we head into the week, there’s a positive health update for the team, particularly in the offensive and defensive lines, which are getting significant reinforcements. According to Ian Rapoport on X, the Falcons are experiencing a boost in health across the board. Standout guard Chris Lindstrom has officially cleared concussion protocol, and star cornerback AJ Terrell is expected to play despite his shoulder issue. Their presence will provide essential veteran stability on both sides of the ball.

While Cooper Rush holds down the position in Week 2, the coaching staff hopes to see Penix back on the field as soon as he feels confident in his reconstructed ACL. Penix showed promise in 2025, throwing for 1,982 yards and nine touchdowns. As a former eighth overall pick, he is eager to lead Kevin Stefanski’s squad. Despite Tagovailoa’s ongoing injury concerns, Atlanta’s quarterback depth will be tested. A swift return for Penix in Week 3 could significantly revitalize the offense.
