Sep. 19—MUSCLE SHOALS — Hartselle couldn't put the lid on Muscle Shoals, 45-14, Friday night.

The Tigers (2-3, 1-2) went into halftime down three, 17-14, but Muscle Shoals (2-2, 2-1) scored 28 unanswered to win the Class 5A, Region 7 matchup.

"We've got to keep fighting and be mentally be in it," Hartselle head coach Bert Newton said. "We need to execute at a high level, and we didn't do that tonight."

Hartselle's only two touchdowns came late in the first half, less than three minutes apart.

Hartselle running back Jai Morrow scored on an 11-yard rush with three minutes to go in the first half.

Muscle Shoals returned the ensuing kickoff 75-yards and scored on a field goal that extended the lead 17-7.

Then, Hartselle quarterback David Amos hit receiver Asa Priola for a 5-yard touchdown pass with 14 seconds left in the half.

"I thought when we executed on offense, those 2 drives were really good," Newton said. "We got in that two minute mode, and we're going to have to live there a little more than we like."

But Muscle Shoals limited Hartselle to less than 200 yards of offense in the game.

"We had penalties, we had bad assignments, and drops," Newton said. "If we don't execute the little things, we're not very good on offense."

The loss marks Hartselle's third of the year and second in region play.

The last time the Tigers lost three games in a year was in 2024.

Next week, they'll be off with a bye.

Newton said the Tigers normally take it easy, but not this time.

"We're going to go to work. Most times in the bye week, we practice two or three times and rest and all that," Newton said. "We're going to do the opposite. We're practicing at least four days. They're lifting at least four days, and we're going to be in full pads and get after it."
