Men's golf: Third-ranked Indian Hills wins season-opening tournament

LINCOLN, NE – The third-ranked Indian Hills men's golf squad cruised to a first-place finish in its season opener at the Blue River Classic. The Warriors outlasted the field by 14 strokes to win its first tournament of the season.
Indian Hills handled the 16-team field by firing a 36-under-par total of 828, running past multiple NCAA and National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) programs. The Warriors fired round scores of 276, 278 and 274 to open the fall campaign.

Behind the all-around dominant team performance, the Warriors were led by freshman Evan Monaghan who took the top overall honor with a 15-under-par 201 to win his first collegiate tournament by a stroke.
Freshman Darcy Mackay placed fourth overall with a 10-under-par 206 to score for the Warriors. Competing as an individual, freshman Joaquin Sandoval tied for fifth overall with a seven-under-par 209.
Collectively, the Warriors placed six individuals in the top-20 of the final standings. George Shakespeare tied with Sandoval for fifth overall with a seven-under-par while Mathias Ostegaard tied for 11th overall with a four-under-par 212. Freshman Ronnie Gibb added a 19th-place finish with an even-par round for the Warriors.
Monaghan proved to be stellar for the Warriors, leading the 88-player field with 19 birdies, three more than any individual in the tournament. Shakespeare tallied a pair of eagles, one on the par-5 11th hole in the first round and one on the opening par-5.
The Warriors resumed play on Monday competing in the Grover Page Classic in Jackson, Tennessee. Indian Hills ended the opening day with a two-round 15-under-par total of 591 at the Jackson Country Club led by Mackay, who followed an even-par opening round of 72 with a two-under par second round of 70 finishing the day in sixth place overall sitting just three strokes out of the lead.
