The Houston Texans opened up the 2026 NFL season at home against the Buffalo Bills, and this contest immediately became one of the most hotly-contested games of Week 1. However, in a tight back-and-forth affair, it was the Bills that came out on top, 36-31 — with Josh Allen sealing the deal for Buffalo with a clutch 34-yard touchdown pass to Joshua Palmer to sink the Texans.
At the end of the day, it was the Bills that executed when it mattered the most. The Texans are worried, however, that they hemorrhaged points with their lackluster defense, and head coach DeMeco Ryans believes that this ended up being the difference in a game that was decided by the tightest of margins.
“We had opportunities to make plays and we didn’t make plays,” Ryans said, per DJ Bien-Aime of ESPN.

Towards the end of the game, the Texans still had some time to steal the game from the Bills. However, on a night where the football seems more slippery than usual, CJ Stroud fumbled the ball on a sack with just 16 seconds remaining in the contest — sealing the victory for Buffalo.
Nonetheless, the Texans’ defense was sliced up by Allen during the previous drive that gave the Bills the lead. Allen completed a 35-yard pass to Dalton Kincaid right at the two-minute warning, and then he followed that up with a 34-yard pass for the go-ahead touchdown. Allowing those kinds of gains simply cannot happen for the Texans moving forward.
Still, there is no reason for Houston to panic even after this defeat. After all, they have lost their season-opener twice over their past three seasons under Ryans. Last year, they even lost their first three games — only for Houston to finish the season on a 12-3 hot streak.
The Texans will not want to start off the season similarly to how they did in 2025. Thus, it will be of the utmost importance to them to grab a win in their Week 2 clash against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday.
