Kyler Murray placed in concussion protocol after leaving Week 1, but able to take part in team meetings

The Minnesota Vikings lost Kyler Murray early in Week 1, but it didn’t matter. Backup Carson Wentz tossed three touchdowns to help the Vikings stun the Green Bay Packers with a 22-point fourth quarter to earn the victory.

But that wasn’t how things were supposed to go. After signing with the team in the offseason, Murray was expected to start for the Vikings and — hypothetically — show growth under Kevin O’Connell.

That might be on hold for a little bit, as Murray was placed in the concussion protocol after Week 1, O’Connell confirmed Monday.

Despite that, however, it sounds like Murray is doing much better than anticipated, and was able to take part in team meetings.

Because of that, Murray is considered day-to-day ahead of Week 2.

That’s a promising development for both Murray and the Vikings. Following the team’s Week 1 win, Minnesota’s job could get even more difficult in Week 2, when the Chicago Bears come to town. The Bears are fresh off a 59-point performance in a win over the Carolina Panthers.

While Wentz should be commended for his performance on short notice, the Vikings’ offense might have an easier time keeping pace with the Bears if Murray’s dual-threat ability is under center in Week 2. It sounds like that scenario is in play based on Murray’s progress Monday.

Ultimately, though, whether Murray plays in Week 2 will be determined by both the Vikings’ team doctors and an independent neurological consultant. Things seem to be in a good spot Monday, but Murray will need to show further improvement during the week in order to be cleared.
