As the Boston Red Sox continue making decisions over the next few weeks, months, and even a year or so with Franklin Arias, at the top of that list is what position they want him to play. It’s tough to get a feel for what exactly Arias can bring to the Red Sox right now because of how young he is, but there’s no debate that this is a kid who has a boatload of talent.

Arias could probably come in and make a nice impact for this team because he's just that good.

Regarding the position he’s going to play, with Trevor Story still with the organization and not looking like he’s going to leave anytime soon because of how much respect he has around the organization and the opportunity to continue to make an impact in Boston, it sounds like Arias could be playing second base.

According to the latest, he’s starting to see more starts at the position.

“The Red Sox continue to give Arias the majority of his reps defensively at shortstop, but he has begun to see an increased frequency of starts at second base as he nears Boston. For all of the well-merited excitement around his hit tool, his 60-grade glove also ties for tops among ranked prospects in the system and his above-average arm strength helps him at either middle-infield spot,” Jesse Borek wrote.

A lot of the focus with Arias, as Borek touched on here, has been on what he’s been able to do offensively. Of course, with prospects, we always want to see guys come in and make an impact on that side of the baseball.

However, as the Red Sox have found out in recent years, knowing Arias probably won’t have to deal with defensive issues, even if he’s playing second base, is exciting.
