Kevin Fiala hasn’t played a hockey game since fracturing his leg while representing his country at the 2026 Winter Olympics in February — and it looks like his return to action could take even longer than expected.
The Swiss forward underwent surgery after suffering the injury, and he required another related procedure this week, the Los Angeles Kings announced Thursday.
“Forward Kevin Fiala underwent a procedure related to the initial surgery to repair injuries sustained at the 2026 Winter Olympics,” the Kings posted on X, formerly Twitter.

“Fiala is expected to miss the start of Training Camp. A timeline for his return to play will be determined as he continues to recover.”
The 30-year-old sustained the injury against Team Canada. He was hit into the boards by Tom Wilson, who then accidentally fell on his left leg in the third period of a 5-1 Switzerland loss.
It was a devastating blow for Fiala, Switzerland and the Kings alike. The Swiss went on to beat Italy 3-0 in the qualifying round before bowing out to Finland 3-2 in overtime in the quarterfinals.
Fiala was ruled out for the remainder of the NHL season in February, with LA announcing that he would be reevaluated at the conclusion of the campaign.
He had chipped in 18 goals and 40 points in 56 games for the Kings before the injury. LA finished 35-27-20, setting up a first-round matchup with the Presidents’ Trophy-winning Colorado Avalanche.
Despite adding star forward Artemi Panarin in a trade with the New York Rangers ahead of the NHL Trade Deadline, the Kings were swept by the Avs, who were themselves eventually swept by the Vegas Golden Knights in the Western Conference Final.
Originally selected 11th overall by the Nashville Predators in the 2014 NHL Draft, Fiala spent nearly five seasons in Nashville before being traded to the Minnesota Wild in February 2019.
He spent parts of four seasons in Minnesota and put together a career-best campaign in 2021-22, amassing 85 points in 82 games. That offseason, he was traded to the Kings in exchange for defenseman Brock Faber and a first-round pick.
Fiala immediately signed a seven-year, $55.125 million contract extension with the Kings. Over 707 career regular-season games split between the Predators, Wild and Kings, he has managed 229 goals and 528 points.
