Florida college football rankings: Look where FSU Seminoles landed after loss to SMU

Hopefully, this will change.

But for now, the beginning of this season still looks like the end of last season: On this weekly list, it's Miami and then everybody else.

In all honesty, we should probably just list the others alphabetically, since there's no way of knowing which way their winds will blow in the coming weeks. In fact, one the schools listed below lost last week ... and MOVED UP! Two spots!

Nope, it ain't scientific. But for now, it's all we got.

1. Miami Hurricanes (1-0)

Last week: (Ranked 1) Won at Stanford, 45-6. This week: FAMU at home, Thursday night. FYI: While others are looking for hints of a silver lining, here is where the rare cloud sticks out. Starting cornerback OJ Frederique suffered a “significant injury” last week and is out indefinitely. The defensive backfield had already lost one of its backups, so no more injuries are allowed back there, since eventually it might matter.

The pick: ’Canes 58, Rattlers 6.

2. USF Bulls (1-0)

Last week: (2) Beat FIU, 19-9. This week: at Army. FYI: What the Colquitts were to punting at Tennessee, the Gramaticas are becoming that at USF. Returning placekicker Nico Gramatica was 4-for-4 last week, and they were all needed. While dad Martin kicked at Kansas State before an NFL career, Nico’s uncles Bill and Santiago both teed it up at USF.

The pick: Black Knights 20, Bulls 19.

3. Florida Gators (1-0)

Last week: (3) Beat FAU, 66-21. This week: Campbell at home. FYI: By the way, those 21 points were the least allowed to a season-opening FBS opponent since way back in 2021. Nostalgia time: Campbell QB Kamden Sixkiller is an Oklahoma native, part Cherokee, and distant relative of long-ago Washington Huskies QB Sonny Sixkiller, who you might also remember as Burt Reynolds’ teammate in The Longest Yard.

The pick: Gators 42, Camels 13.

4. UCF Knights (1-0)

Last week: (4) Beat Bethune-Cookman, 73-6. This week: at Pitt. FYI: Pitt will always lose four or five games and always win four or five games, without fail. What happens in those other two-to-four games determines how late in December they play an off-Broadway bowl game. This is one of those.

The pick: Panthers 26, Knights 24.

5. FSU Seminoles (1-1)

Last week: (7) Lost to SMU, 27-24. This week: Off. FYI: In the honky tonks, they call them “ugly” lights. A lot of us look better when the dimmers are low, way before closing time. You know who you are. The ’Noles actually looked better than some feared they would in that dusky Monday nighter against a pretty good SMU team.

Next week: It won’t be very dark for a mid-afternooner in Tuscaloosa against Alabama. 

6. FIU Panthers (0-1)

Last week: (5) Lost at USF, 19-9. This week: Buffalo at home. FYI: In Willie Simmons first year in ’25, the Panthers won nearly all the games they were supposed to win and one or two they weren’t. This is definitely a “should.”

The pick: Panthers 30, Bulls 13.

7. FAU Owls (0-1)

Last week: (6) Lost at Florida, 66-21. This week: Navy at home. FYI: The Owls and Midshipmen, in their respective season openers, combined for 59 pass attempts. Guess which team contributed six to that pile. It’s always odd to consider Navy with such a great ground game, but even Knute Rockne never devised a way to attack by sea.

The pick: Middies 28, Owls 23.
