Sartell uses pair of early second half goals to get by Tech

SARTELL, MN — Going into halftime, Sartell and Tech boys soccer had both left the scoreboard blank and were eager to break through and see one go through the net.

The Sabres had several opportunities, keeping possession on the attacking half for majority of the first 40 minutes while Tech could only sneak in a few breakaway opportunities.
Then the early aggression started to pay off.
Do-it-all senior Alex Pooler got the first goal to fall in the 39th minute of the second half before most fans had even returned from the concession lines. Not even two minutes later, senior forward Cole Davidson found the net again in the 37th minute of the second half.
In a span of two minutes, the Sabres had taken a commanding lead and held on for the 3-1 win Tuesday, Sept. 8.
After Davidson’s goal, it was as if the Tech student section had just seen a ghost. It was only last year that Sartell had beat Tech 2-1 in the Section 8 championship, and the wound was certainly still fresh.
“We talk about staying aggressive and we knew that we had good looks, and we knew [a goal] was going to come,” Sartell coach Caleb Forberg said. “The guys were upbeat; I think they knew they were playing well, and we knew we just had to bury. Credit to them for keeping their focus.”
As the half matured, Sartell kept the aggression on, compiling nearly 15 shots on goal for the game — twice that of Tech.
Junior forward Bode Wannebo found the net on a beautiful left footer off a corner kick in the 27th minute to make things interesting, but freshman forward Nolan Guzman would put the game away in the 16th minute.
“Tech came out strong in the second half,” Forberg said. “I felt like we just continued to battle the whole way, so credit to the boys for just sticking with the game plan and finishing some shots.”
While offensive was the name of the game for Sartell tonight, the prowess of Owen Woodruff in the goal and the Sabre defense may have been the effort needed to win.
“Owen does a good job, and tonight Brady [Anderson] and Bennett [Moe] in the center back just communicating with the outside guys, that’s the key,” Forberg said. “You got to cover for each other; it’s a team sport back there, and I think their ability to help each other out and cover was evident from the start. I applauded them at halftime, so if we can continue to communicate, it works wonders back there.”
Both teams are back in action on Sept. 10 as Sartell hosts Moorhead and Tech travels up to Detroit Lakes.
