Pressure mounts but Malagò ‘not worried’ about potential FIGC presidency ineligibility

Giovanni Malagò insists he’s ‘not worried’ after CONI President Luciano Buonfiglio and Sports Minister Andrea Abodi said they’ll closely monitor the case concerning his potential ineligibility as FIGC President.

FIGC President Malagò says he’s not concerned by CONI’s decision not to dismiss a case regarding his alleged ineligibility.
Malagò did not formally hold a federation membership when he was elected FIGC President on June 22, 2026, but met the requirements to obtain it.

Every candidate for the FIGC Presidency must hold a federation membership, but because Malagò met the requirements, FIGC Prosecutor Chiné asked to dismiss the case.
The Attorney General of Sport, however, rejected the request and demanded further inquiries.
“I’m calm; I think it would be wrong to tell the whole story now. It seems to me that everyone knows it very well,” Malagò said on Wednesday via Il Fatto Quotidiano.
“I’m not worried. Let’s say it’s been a few months since different paths were attempted, rather than the electoral consensus dynamics that have existed.”

CONI President Bonfiglio and Sports Minister Abodi took the matter seriously Wednesday morning, saying they would closely monitor future developments.
“I’ll start by saying that I never believed and wanted this story here to materialise and become formalised,” Bonfiglio said via press agency Adn Kronos.
“That said, it must be taken carefully and without haste. CONI and its president will try not to make mistakes.
“I am not influenced by either the right or the left, neither above nor below,” Buonfiglio added.
“But I must do what is not a right, but a duty of the president of CONI: make very careful evaluations; we will evaluate the situation.”
Sports minister Abodi added: “It’s an issue that sports justice is addressing at every level. The rules are known-the sporting and state ones-beyond their interpretability.

“To each his role, mine is that of a respectful but interested observer of this situation.”
The FIGC Prosecutor has been asked to clarify Malagò’s eligibility, which may result in Malagò being dethroned and all his decisions, including Roberto Mancini’s appointment as Italy head coach, being revoked.
Gazzetta notes that Malagò is an individual IOC member, the highest sporting authority in the world, which makes the requests for a federation membership, which was not always made in the past for similar cases, not quite justifiable.
