The Cubs' bullpen has a 4.00 ERA for the season and a 4.22 ERA since the start of August. They also have six blown saves in that span. On Tuesday night, Jacob Webb came in with a two-run lead in the ninth and got two quick outs. He faced pinch hitter Christian Yelich, giving up a single. Jackson Chourio then homered to tie the game with two outs.
It was the third straight save opportunity that Webb has blown.
"Poor location, that's really it," Webb explained after the game.
"There's always things you can work on, every single day," Webb said when asked if there's something with his mechanics he needs to get right. "Yeah, I'm tired of letting the team down, to be completely honest. It's pretty tough to watch every time I give up a homer."
Webb stayed in the dugout for some extra time after the Brewers walked off the Cubs in the 10th inning. The Cubs' chances of catching the Brewers in the standings are now slim to none, and the focus should be figuring out what the bullpen plan in October will be. The team does not have a true closer, and Craig Counsell is clearly uncomfortable with going to the bullpen at any point in the game right now.
The Brewers have played the Cubs six times in the last nine days, and in every one of those games, the Brewers have planned to wait out the starter, knowing they can crush the Cubs bullpen. They have won back-to-back games by staging late-inning comebacks.
