Team USA apparently made a massive mistake at the 2026 FIBA World Cup, and it has nothing to do with their on-court performance.

Despite a close call against Italy, Team USA has managed to dominate throughout the group stages of the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup.

While Team USA has already clinched a spot in the quarterfinals, Dallas Wings head coach Jose Fernandez recently pointed out a massive mistake made by Kara Lawson’s players.

Jose Fernandez says Team USA didn’t have enough time to play together

Individually, Team USA has a plethora of phenomenal players like Caitlin Clark, Paige Bueckers, Angel Reese, and more.

But the first three games of the tournament have exposed a few cracks in the chemistry between the 12-player roster. Fernandez believes this is currently the biggest weakness of Team USA.

“I wouldn’t say that. I mean, the biggest thing is that a lot of these teams have been together, and they’ve had a lot of time to practice. You know, our [Dallas Wings] last game was on – what, when was it? Like Sunday against Connecticut; it was at like 7:30,” Fernandez said.

“Paige and I got on a plane on Monday. We got here on Tuesday. We had, like, a really, really light day on Tuesday, and then we only had two other practices, and then we’re playing, right? So, it’s a short time to prepare,” the Wings head coach added.

Indeed, two light practice sessions aren’t enough time to build real chemistry between players, and it was obvious during Team USA’s 55-52 win over Italy.

It will be interesting to see if they can overcome this weakness, or will it ultimately cost them a shot at winning a fifth consecutive gold medal for Team USA?
