Light aircraft crashes in Midrand, narrowly misses pedestrian

Two people were taken to hospital after a light aircraft crashed near the R101 in Midrand on Tuesday afternoon, 8 September.

Emergency crews rushed to the scene near New Road and Old Pretoria Main Road in the Glen Austin area shortly before 15:00.
A man and a woman were inside the aircraft when it came down near a business property.
Community Emergency Response Team (CERT-SA) co-founder and spokesperson Ruan Heyns said crews received the call at about 14:58.
According to CERT-SA, the aircraft narrowly missed a pedestrian on the ground before coming to a stop.
A bystander managed to help the two occupants out of the aircraft before emergency crews arrived.
Two occupants taken to hospital
Paramedics assessed both occupants at the scene.
“One patient sustained moderate injuries, while the second patient sustained minor injuries,” Heyns said.
Netcare 911 transported both patients to hospital for further treatment.

Johannesburg Emergency Management Services spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi separately confirmed that two occupants suffered injuries in the crash and that private ambulance services attended to them.
Authorities have not yet released the identities of the two people.
The cause of the crash also remains unclear.
Midrand traffic disrupted
The incident caused major traffic problems around New Road and the R101.
The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) said a separate vehicle accident occurred at the same location while emergency teams were dealing with the aircraft crash.
The R101 between New Road and Grand Central Boulevard was closed in the direction of Centurion while crews worked to remove the aircraft and authorities began investigating the crash.
JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla urged motorists to avoid the affected intersection and leave access open for emergency vehicles.
Drivers can use the N1 via the Allandale Road or Olifantsfontein Road interchanges, while local motorists can use Lever Road or Dale Road.
Authorities are expected to release more information as the investigation progresses.
