Huntsville hosts successful para-cycling finals, athletes fight heat on road to 2028 Paralympics

The para-cycling road world finals wrapped up Labor Day in Huntsville, bringing para-athletes from around the world to compete in the final stretch of competition.
Spectators lined the roads at Cummings Research Park as athletes raced for medals on the last day of the event.

American para-cyclist Clara Brown finished second in her group and spoke with FOX54 after her race. She said the heat was the toughest challenge of the week.
"The biggest beast honestly was the heat. I think that was such a big factor throughout the week. Huntsville definitely knows how to turn it up for us, so we were just trying to stay cool. We had as much ice on us as possible to start and then staff throughout the course handing up ice socks and just splashing us with water, so that was the biggest beast, and I'm really glad that we had so much support to keep us cool."
Ashley Engels Ross with the Huntsville Madison County Chamber of Commerce said the event adds to a growing lineup of sporting events drawing new visitors to the region.
"We have world-class sporting events. We have incredible people that are coming out that are celebrating, that recognize the value of having this kind of event here in our home. And I think you just, you can't pass that up. People want to be a part of this. You can be a part of going to the moon. You can be a part of para cycling events. You can be a part of any number of incredible things. It's a wonderful place to live. It's a wonderful place to be."
For the athletes, this weekend's competition marks another step toward the 2028 Paralympic Games in Los Angeles.
