Gakpo turns selection pressure into early momentum

Alexander Isak supplied the two goals, both scored inside nine minutes, and understandably collected the official man-of-the-match award. Yet Gakpo shaped the contest just as decisively. His two assists were different in execution but identical in purpose: receive the ball, recognise the opening and send Liverpool forwards before Ipswich could recover their defensive shape.
The second was especially fine. Gakpo used the outside of his boot to release Isak, whose touch and finish completed a move rich in imagination and assurance. It was the sort of pass that turns an ordinary attacking situation into a clear chance before defenders have time to understand the danger.
Gakpo finished with two assists, three key passes, two accurate through-balls, three tackles and 90 per cent passing accuracy. Those figures captured the breadth of his performance. He was creative and careful in possession, but also willing to work without it. For Liverpool, that balance matters as much as the decoration.
Liverpool competition brings a convincing response
Speaking on the Anfield Index Newsround, the original source for this assessment, Dave Davis identified Gakpo as the player thriving amid Liverpool’s increased competition for places.
Davis said: “There’s real competition for Cody Gakpo now. Remember how he did with Diaz in the title-winning season as well. I honestly think a part of that is just, however it happens, it’s lifting his game. It’s early doors, but what a start to the season. Like that title-winning season, and I know eventually Diaz kind of ended up as a false nine, but on that left at times, if Diaz didn’t do the business, Gakpo, on you come. Gakpo not doing the business, Diaz, on you come. Use it to our benefit. There’s a fear of losing his starting spot, to our benefit. Long may it continue. All top clubs have competition. Nothing wrong with that at all. And Cody Gakpo, fair play to him, has responded to it.”
That judgement reaches beyond a single productive evening. Liverpool now possess contrasting attacking profiles, meaning reputation alone cannot guarantee minutes. Gakpo can operate from the left or through the centre, but versatility is valuable only when accompanied by influence. Against Ipswich, he made himself impossible to ignore.
Quick thinking gives Liverpool an attacking identity
Liverpool’s finest work came early because their intentions were unmistakable. They recovered possession, looked forwards immediately and attacked spaces before Ipswich could reorganise. Gakpo was central to that approach, providing the service from which Isak twice scored.
The first goal arrived after five minutes, with Gakpo feeding the striker quickly. The goalkeeper might have done better, but the speed of Liverpool’s transition created the uncertainty. Four minutes later, Gakpo’s inventive pass and Isak’s instinctive finish doubled the advantage.
Liverpool registered six shots on target in the first half and played with an aggression that had been missing from less convincing displays. Their pace was not simply about sprinting. It came from fast decisions, vertical passes and a collective understanding that openings disappear when possession is recycled too cautiously.
The second half was quieter and occasionally careless, although Liverpool protected their lead and secured a clean sheet. That change of rhythm should not obscure the authority of the opening period. Winning well also requires knowing when the match no longer needs to be chased at full speed.
Sustained standards can make Gakpo indispensable
One performance does not settle Liverpool’s selection debates. It does, however, establish the standard required to remain at the front of them. Gakpo’s challenge is to reproduce this combination of creativity, discipline and defensive effort when the opposition, role and state of the game change.
His competition offers Liverpool tactical variety. A direct runner can stretch a tiring defence, while Gakpo can connect attacks, drift inside and act as a centre-forward when required. Those options give the manager greater control over how matches begin and how they are closed out.
For Gakpo, the equation is simple. Every incisive pass, recovery run and decisive contribution strengthens his claim. Every dip opens the door for somebody else. Liverpool need that tension to remain healthy because genuine competition prevents comfort from becoming complacency.
Isak took the goals and the acclaim at Ipswich, but Gakpo provided the creative architecture. If this is what greater competition produces, Liverpool should welcome the selection problem. Gakpo is not merely surviving it. He is beginning to thrive because of it.
