Jimmie Johnson Addresses Altercation Rumors With John Hunter Nemechek Before LMC Exit

Jimmie Johnson has refuted rumors of an altercation with John Hunter Nemechek. He went over the growing speculation with a lighthearted candor.

Nemechek and Legacy Motor Club recently announced they would part ways after the 2026 season, and rumors quickly took hold of an alleged clash between the No. 42 driver and team owner Johnson. The face-off allegedly took place after the Dollar Tree 301 at New Hampshire, where Nemechek spun out and finished five laps down in 31st.
Johnson squashed the rumors in a SiriusXM interview, saying,
“Not true, no, actually, we were checking last night, I think one of those may suggest that we got into a fist fight, and we had a funny text exchange about that.”
“as the owner of the company, I’ve not been in this situation, and it’s not easy, and I don’t want to be lighthearted about it. You know, a very difficult decision for us to make. We live in a pro sports world, and sometimes there are other factors in play that just have to be considered and thought about. And that’s really the root of it all,” he added.
John Hunter Nemechek’s sponsor, Dollar Tree, celebrated their 40th anniversary at New Hampshire and even changed his car number to 40. They also sponsored Nemechek’s Truck Series race that weekend, where he garnered negative publicity for dumping rookie Landen Lewis.
The 29-year-old ultimately finished 19th in the same TRICON Garage car that Corey Heim drove to victory last year. In the Cup race, Nemechek spun out unassisted during green-flag conditions, much to the dismay of Dollar Tree.
Many believe Nemechek’s performance across the two races caused the fallout with Jimmie Johnson. With the conflict now dismissed as baseless, LMC has announced that Nemechek will be recognized as an honorary Sheriff’s Deputy by the Darlington County Sheriff’s Office at Darlington Raceway.

“I am incredibly grateful to LEGACY MOTOR CLUB for the past three years. While I am obviously disappointed with their decision, I am as motivated as ever. It has been such an honor to represent Toyota, LEGACY MOTOR CLUB and all of their sponsors. I can’t wait to continue this journey, as I know my best days are ahead,” he wrote.
Legacy Motor Club has announced Riley Herbst as the third driver on the roster, driving the No. 84. Herbst currently drives for 23XI Racing, but will make way for reigning Truck Series champion Corey Heim in 2027.
Furthermore, LMC expands into a three-car entry next year, creating an additional opening within the team.
