· Yahoo Sports

Tennessee football didn’t miss a beat when backup quarterback George MacIntyre relieved starter Faizon Brandon in the 18th-ranked Vols’ game against Furman on Sept. 5.

MacIntyre, a sophomore, lost Brandon, a five-star freshman, in a preseason competition for the starting job. The former Brentwood Academy standout replaced Brandon in the third quarter in this 2026 season opener.

Here’s a quick rundown of MacIntyre’s relief performance for Tennessee (1-0) against Furman (1-1).

George MacIntyre stats

MacIntyre was 5-of-7 passing for 56 yards, one TD and no interceptions. He did not have a rushing attempt.

George MacIntyre’s best: Touchdown pass to TK Keys

MacIntyre tossed a 22-yard TD pass to five-star freshman TK Keys on his first drive after relieving Brandon. It was a deep sideline pass that allowed Keys to adjust in making the catch.

That capped a 10-play, 75-yard touchdown drive and extended the Vols’ lead to 49-3.

George MacIntyre’s worst: Fumbled snap

MacIntyre was in the game for three drives. That included two touchdowns and one turnover, a fumbled snap by MacIntyre.

Grade: B+

It would take a couple of looks at the replay to know if MacIntyre was at fault of the fumbled snap. But before that, he tossed a touchdown pass. He looked very comfortable in the offense and capable as the backup quarterback.

Obviously, Brandon earned the headlines with his exceptional debut performance. But MacIntyre played reasonably well in relief.
