Podcast king pinpoints Trump's Lake Ontario name change as 'war distraction'

That’s what American podcast host Joe Rogan said about U.S. President Donald Trump’s controversial move late last month to rename Lake Ontario.
“It’s to distract you from the fact we’re in a war we can’t win in Iran,” Rogan said during The Joe Rogan Experience on Tuesday, reacting to questions from comedian Brian Simpson, his guest on that show.
“It doesn’t make any sense.”
Podcaster once supported Trump
Rogan, who in 2024 offered a wholehearted endorsement of Trump’s presidential campaign, has become increasingly skeptical of the U.S. President.
He’s also become increasingly critical of Trump’s performative acts while in office — including renaming Lake Ontario — as well as the White House’s trade war against Canada, expressing concern that targeting historic allies like Canada will have a net negative impact on the American economy.
“Who cares if it’s called Lake Ontario? It’s a good name,” Rogan remarked during Tuesday’s podcast.
Rogan has also expressed public criticism over how U.S. federal agencies like the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) are dealing with rounding up and deporting illegal immigrants, as well as Trump’s military decisions — including joint strikes with Israel against Iran.
“We might have f—ed it up again by going to Iran,” Rogan said in July to his guest, British politician Rupert Lowe.
“Most people don’t want it, except supporters of Israel. They’re the only people that seem to be thinking it’s a good idea in this country.”
Indeed, Trump promised U.S. operations to re-open the Strait of Hormuz, dubbed Operation Epic Fury , would last “four to five weeks.”
Now, six months later, the strait remains effectively closed to commercial shipping, and fuel prices around the world continue to race out of control.
