Last night was an old-fashioned pitchers’ duel between Davis Martin and Hayden Wesneski. Davis worked 5.2 shutout innings and Wesneski threw seven scoreless innings. Houston broke through with two in the eighth on Nelson Velazquez’ single to center which scored Jose Altuve and Isaac Paredes. AJ Blubaugh pitched around trouble in the eighth to pick up his fifth win of the season and Josh Hader pitched a perfect ninth to pick up his 22nd save and complete the shutout. The White Sox were held to three hits for the game.
The win was Houston’s third in their last four games while Chicago has now lost three of their last four. Cleveland lost last night so the Sox remain on top in the AL Central by three games. The Rangers lost and so the Astros’ lead in the AL West is now two games.
Luis Castillo (4-10, 5.31 ERA) takes the ball for the White Sox this afternoon. The righthander has labored for much of the season but especially since coming over at the Trade Deadline from Seattle. In five starts for Chicago, Castillo has allowed fewer than four runs once and completed five innings or more once. The long ball could well be a factor today as Castillo has offered up 23 home runs this season. Houston sends their ace, Hunter Brown (4-3, 3.33 ERA) to the mound today. The righthander’s last two starts have been gems as he has allowed a total of two runs across his last 12.1 innings. There is familiarity for Brown when it comes to the White Sox. He faced the Sox on July 25 in the Windy City and blanked them for seven innings. He struck out seven and allowed just two hits in a 4-1 win.
