Giants’ Cam Skattebo considered retiring after gruesome season-ending injury

Coming out of college, Cam Skattebo gave himself one rule.
The hard-nosed Giants running back told Kay Adams on Thursday’s episode of Up & Adams that if he ever suffered a major injury he would walk away from football.

Seven games into his career, that exact scenario presented itself.
Skattebo, of course, saw his rookie season cut short as he suffered a gruesome ankle injury during a Week 8 meeting with the Eagles that required season-ending surgery.
The 25-year-old admitted that he did contemplate calling it a quits one month into the recovery, but ultimately decided his time had not yet come.
“The first month was like ‘damn, do I really want to do this?’” he explained. “And then it was only seven games in, I was like I have to go back and play, there’s no shot.”
By the time the season came to an end, those thoughts were long gone.
Skattebo attacked his rehab head-on, and took that time to figure out the person he wants to be on and off the field.
“That’s something I’ve built over the last 9-10 months,” he said. “Now being able to focus back in on football, I’ve had lots of talks with family and friends, and it’s football time now.”
The Arizona State product is once again expected to play a lead-role in Big Blue’s backfield.
Skattebo was taking the league by storm before being forced to the sidelines with the injury, racking up 617 yards from scrimmage and seven touchdowns over his first seven games (five starts).
